Dear admission committee at the Animation Workshop,

My name is Jack and I am applying to the CGA-bachelor program 2016. I am 24 years of age and I have applied once before, last year to the same program, 2015. I love stories, drawing, creating, creativity and imagination. Since my childhood, I have been drawing, creating and improving myself. Movies, animations and games has been essential parts in my life, continue to be so to this day, and will always be. These subjects are so much more than hours of joy and entertainment. They are emotions, ethics, morals, connections and most of all gateways to our own and other worlds. This is why I am applying! I want to be a part of the hardworking and ever evolving creative workforce that creates these hours of entertainment. Most of all I am applying to CGA because of the amazing technical aspects involved and because I hope to one day be designing stories, worlds and characters that people will recognize for generations.

I think the industry as it is now is going to continue to grow rapidly. There is currently a focus on superheroes in mainstream movies and therefore constant use for concept artists to design worlds and costumes for both heroes and villains that fans are going to love. The VFX department is also evolving. Especially for movies like Mad Max and Star Wars which there are going to be a lot more off. In the meantime, the technology in motion capture is becoming better and is used more frequently and more in film and gaming. Actors does not have to be typecast for roles anymore. With motion capture, any actor can play a Gollum, a Smaug, a Ceaser or a Supreme Emperor Snoke. Voice actors for video games does not have to spend their day in a booth and only act with their voice anymore. They can know truly become the character. Moreover, in the end, the many 3D artists finish the work and make the performances and the polygons cooperate.

In 2009-2012, I was one of the first that had the honor of being a part of the Visuel HF program and had Iben Lindebjerg as a teacher. I tasted the atmosphere of TAW, met the most amazing of friends and simply had the time of my life.

From 2012-2014 I wanted to try something different. Therefore, I took the Multimedia designer - Film and animation program at Erhversakademiet Lillebælt in Odense where I achieved new skills in web design, film editing, business, communication and a bit of 3D in Maya. I had a great time. Met great people, and I spent two amazing weeks in California, and attend a five months internship at a small web-firm called Symatic Production.

  • I am almost fluent in Photoshop.
  • I am an average user of Premiere and After Effects.
  • I know the basics of Illustrator, Maya and Flash.

Walt Disney studios, Ghibli studios, Pixar, Blizzard and Marvel have always been the main inspirations for me.
Specific people that inspire me are Marc Brunet, Ahmed Aldoori, Jim Lee, Hayao Miyazaki, Matthew Mercer, James Gunn and J.J. Abrams. All of these people are to me artists who have in their own way made themselves standout in the worlds they move in and I hope to one day do something similar.
In addition, my friends and family inspire me greatly because they believe in me especially if there are times where I do not believe in myself.

My three favorite works are:
1. Deadpool. Both the comics, the game and the recent movie. Because not only is he so different and unique from every other superhero, villain and anti-hero but also from most other characters ever. He is a complex and fun character like no other.
2. The Evil Dead/ Army of Darkness series. These movies created the splatstick comedy genre and an iconic quotable character known as Ash. In addition, the reason these movies worked is that they were b-movies. B-movies can take chances that a-movies cannot because expects them to make millions of dollars.
3. The Diablo series. Not only are the games fun in gameplay, has amazing concept art and stunning cinematics. However, for a game mostly about grinding it has a great story and some interesting characters.

Three least favorite works:
1. Fant4stic. The newest movie installment of the Fantastic Four. Nothing against any actors or people who worked on the film but I think this movie must have looked better on paper. It just did not work. The characters were somewhat weak. The new take on the story was somewhat odd and Dr. Doom, one of the best villains of all time were not really engaging or interesting in any way. This is also an excellent contrast between major movies and smaller movies. Fox studios expected the Fantastic Four movie to produce millions and launch a franchise but failed. Deadpool however consisted of a small group of people who understood the character and world of Deadpool. They managed to make one the most successful superhero movies and open up the world for R-rated superhero movies.
2. Rick and Morty. This is a show, that as far as I am aware is immensely popular and I actually expected to like it a lot. On the outside, it seems like something like Adventure Time, SpongeBob, Flapjack or South Park, which are all shows I enjoy. Nevertheless, to me Rick and Morty seems to be lazy writing and flat humor. It also seems, to expect to work because it follows the formula of being strange and bizarre. However, everyone else around me seems to enjoy it.
3. Twilight. I have watched the first two. The characters are dull, the mood is constantly grey and the story is not that great. Some of the world is interesting. The werewolves being very big wolves seems like a new take on werewolves. So does the glitter thing for the vampires but that does not really work or make sense.

My free time I spent with friends and family, taking care of the family Great Dane, seeing movies (especially geeking out about the superhero ones!), playing video games and personal projects. Currently I am also in a Pathfinder RPG group, which is like Dungeons and Dragons that again is all about character creation, storytelling, story development and teamwork.
In addition, I am trying to see more places of the world and therefore try to travel from time to time with a good friend of mine. We have been to Paris together for our first trip and not only did I learn that Paris is a beautiful city but I also learned to be less prejudice. People told me that the French do not want to speak English and that they are rude to visitors. However, I can know from personal experience say that those things are very untrue!
The very same friend has also inspired me to start writing a script for short film and work on a story besides that which is going to be a fantasy/sci-fi story based on Norse creatures like trolls, hulders, the Nix (Nøkken) and elves.

To finance the education I will spend my savings and I intend to make use of the Danish S.U.

Thank you for reading and I hope you will enjoy looking through my portfolio
